Rwampara authorities embark on the restoration of wetlands.

Authorities in the southwestern district of Rwampara have embarked on a move to restore depleted wetlands in the area.

The natural resources department is working in collaboration with the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) and the Uganda Police Force to restore the wetlands in the areas of Kashasha, Bugamba, and Ndeija.

The restoration campaign, which kicked off today, will last for ten days.

Rwampara district acting natural resources officer Evelyne Kyomugisha says that the move is in line with the recent presidential directive aimed at ensuring that all people encroaching on wetlands vacate immediately. She says that the restoration of wetlands is vital for the protection of the environment.

Sarah Ayijuka, the National Environmental Management Authority regional manager for Mbarara, revealed that the locals must work with the leaders to ensure that the environment is protected.

Rwampara district police commander Denis Pahan revealed that the police are on standby to support the authorities in effecting the presidential directive.
