Enid Origumisiriza, the former Kabale District Woman Member of Parliament aspirant and Director of the Children of the Word Ministries, has called on parents to prioritize the safety of their children during the long holidays and extend vigilant parental guidance.

Origumisiriza’s plea was part of her Christmas message delivered at a press conference held at the Albertine Hotel in Kabale Municipality yesterday.

She expressed concern about the potential dangers children face during the holidays due to parental negligence and urged parents to be mindful of their children’s safety both at home and outside.

“As parents, we need to be aware of our children’s whereabouts, the company they keep, and the individuals they interact with. This awareness can significantly reduce the risk of incidents such as rape, defilement, kidnapping, and murder,” Origumisiriza emphasized.

The former MP aspirant highlighted the rising cases of child abuse and torture, citing a 15.6% increase from 1,073 cases in 2021 to 1,240 cases reported to the police in 2022. Shocking statistics revealed that four in ten girls and four in ten boys experience sexual abuse before reaching the age of ten.

Citing these alarming figures, Origumisiriza underscored the need for proactive parental involvement in ensuring the safety of children. She urged parents to actively engage in their children’s lives, fostering a protective environment that shields them from potential harm.

During the press conference, Origumisiriza also took the opportunity to condemn the intertwining of politics and religion, asserting that it undermines the true essence of electing leaders. Responding to questions about her potential return to politics, she clarified that her decision was not influenced by religious motivations, emphasizing her commitment to steering clear of religious biases in the political arena.

As the holiday season unfolds, Origumisiriza’s message serves as a timely reminder for parents to prioritize the well-being of their children, ensuring a safe and nurturing environment for them to thrive.
