The Butogota Police Station in Kanungu is currently grappling with the aftermath of a horrifying incident where a 30-year-old man, Joshua Turyasingura, was lynched to death by an angry mob. The incident occurred on January 5, 2024, at Rutendere Central Cell/Parish, Kayonza sub-county, Kanungu District.

The victim, Turyasingura, was a resident of Rwenyerere Cell, Bihomborwa Ward, Kihihi Town Council, and Kanungu District. According to the police statement (SD.05/05/01/24), Turyasingura was accused of defiling and subsequently murdering a 13-year-old girl from Rukara Cell, Kihembe Sub-county, Kanungu District, on January 4, 2024. The case had been officially registered under Kihihi CRB.15/2024.

Kigezi regional police spokesperson Elly Maate says that it is alleged that Turyasingura attacked the young girl, striking her with a log on the head before disposing of the body in a banana plantation. The gruesome discovery of the victim’s body led to an immediate investigation and subsequent manhunt for the suspect.

Attempting to evade justice, Turyasingura sought refuge at his father’s home in Bwaswa Cell, Buhoma Town Council, Kanungu District. However, an enraged mob, fueled by the heinous nature of the crime, tracked him down and apprehended him at Rutendere Central Cell. In an act of vigilante justice, the mob lynched Turyasingura before law enforcement could intervene.

The police, upon receiving the alert, rushed to the scene, only to find that it was too late to prevent the tragedy. Turyasingura, described as a habitual criminal terrorizing the community, had already met a violent end at the hands of the furious crowd.

The crime scene at Rutendere Central Cell was thoroughly examined and documented by law enforcement officers. Turyasingura’s body was subsequently transported to Kihihi Health Center 4 for a postmortem examination as part of the ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death.
