Rukungiri Police Probe Death of 46-Year-Old Woman Allegedly Assaulted by Husband

Police in Rukungiri district are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 46-year-old woman.

The incident occurred in Nyakasa village, Ibanda Parish, Nyarushanje Subcounty, and Rukungiri district, where a 46-year-old woman, Maria Busingye, lost her life allegedly due to assault by her 60-year-old husband, Richard Rukuunya, alias Sanyu.

Kigezi regional police spokesperson Elly Maate revealed that initial reports indicate that on the evening of March 17, 2024, a dispute between the couple escalated into a physical altercation, prompting a neighbor, Kyarimpa Diana, to intervene. Following the altercation, Maria Busingye sought refuge at Kyarimpa Diana’s home, where she spent the night without receiving any medical attention for her injuries.

He adds that Maria Busingye’s condition deteriorated, and on March 19, 2024, her relatives, upon learning of her situation, transported her to Rubabo Medical Centre Clinic. Despite efforts to save her, Maria Busingye succumbed to her injuries at the medical facility.

The local authorities were alerted to the incident by Michael Musime, the chairman of local council three in Nyarushanje. Subsequently, Rubabo Police Station registered a case under SD reference 11/19/03/2024. Upon receiving the report, law enforcement officers visited the crime scene to collect evidence and document the findings.

The suspect, Richard Rukuunya, has been apprehended and is currently in custody at Rukungiri Central Police Station to assist with further inquiries into the matter. Additionally, Maria Busingye’s body has been transferred to the Rwakabengo Health Centre III mortuary for postmortem examination.
