Citizens in Rukiga district express apprehension regarding Rwandan nationals’ involvement in the electoral process within Uganda, spotlighting challenges at the border shared between the two nations.

At an interface meeting held at the Apo Hotel Muhanga in Rukiga district on Thursday, concerns were raised over the participation of Rwandan nationals who frequent Uganda through Buziba Customs and allegedly engage in the country’s electoral affairs.

Organized by Kick Corruption Out of Uganda (KICK-U) in collaboration with the Uganda National NGO Forum (UNNGOF) with support from USAID, the dialogue emphasized the prevalence of electoral malpractices observed in previous elections.

Instances of concern included discrepancies in vote counts exceeding registered voters, reported harassment by security personnel, and unauthorized relocation of individuals.

In response to queries raised during the dialogue, Mr. Bruno Tusingwire, Assistant Registrar of Rukiga District, acknowledged the challenges witnessed in past elections and reassured participants of efforts to mitigate such issues in the upcoming polls.

Tusingwire stressed the importance of community involvement in pre-election activities such as voter education and registration, highlighting challenges arising from unrealistic expectations, including demands for monetary incentives.

Additional concerns voiced during the meeting encompassed the influx of money during election seasons, the involvement of religious leaders, and instances of intimidation.

Rukiga District Deputy RDC Kamusime Zadoch emphasized the need for collaborative efforts between KICK-U and electoral officials to address escalating challenges during election periods, ensuring the security of citizens and their properties.

The dialogue saw the presence of various stakeholders, including Rukiga District Speaker Rt. Hon. Akampurira Oscar, Rukiga District Police Commander SP Hussein Niwagaba, councilors, and members of the business community.

According to KICK-U officials, similar dialogue sessions are planned in Kabala and Rubanda districts, aimed at promoting the recently released electoral roadmap and gathering insights on citizens’ concerns and challenges during electoral processes.
