Congolese and Rwandan nationals arrested by police in Kabale

In an operation to repel alleged plans by the opposition to disrupt President Museveni’s Inauguration ceremony slated for 12th May 2021, Police in Kabale has arrested 22 Congo and Rwandan Nationals on charges of illegal entry in Uganda.

Out of the 22 SUSPECTS paraded before the media at Kabale Police Station on Tuesday, 7 hail from the Democratic Republic Of Congo while 15 are from Rwanda.


Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson Elly Maate said they were arrested from different checkpoints along Kabale- Mbarara road while travelling to to Kampala and Masaka.


Maate said Police was tipped off by differnt bus companies that alerted Police after they saw an unusual number of non Ugandans boarding their buses claiming they were going to Kampala and Masaka. 


He said the suspects would be charged for illegal entry, but Police would interrogate them deeper to find out if they had any connection with reports that the opposition was recruiting none Ugandan citizens to participate in riots to disrupt Museveni’s swearing ceremony slated for today.

The Kabale District Crime Intelligence Officer Jackline Mbabazi said they recently received an order from top security offices that they should intensify counter intelligence operations because the opposition was planning to use none Ugandan citizens in disrupting tomorrow’s function.


Meanwhile, our reporter interviewed some of the arrested people. Tuyishime Jean Damasen also known as John Peter and Innocent Ngirabavandimwe Innocent alias Kasajja from Musanze District in the Northern Province of Rwanda, admitted that they had entered Uganda illegally. 


They claimed they crossed from Rwanda through porous borders in Kisoro District and they were traveling to Maska District to work as casual laborers in crop gardens.

Nzabonimpa Specioza and Phoebe Ntawigyenera also from Musanze District said they were going for burrial of their mother who died in Kabwohe, Shema District.


 They said the mother had migrated from Musanze to Kabawohe many years ago. The duo also admitted that they had entered Uganda illegally through Kisoro District adding that they were ready to return home and abandon the burrial of their mother since they had no travel documents.

Vicent Kamengere from Democratic Republic Of Congo said he had entered Uganda to look for a herbal medicine for his relative who is suffering from chronic Hernia disease. He said that he was going to buy the herbal medicine from Kampala.
