A 35-year-old catechist attached to Kabale diocese has died by drowning after a canoe he was sailing on capsized on lake Bunyonyi.
The deceased has been identified as Nafutali Kizabona, a catechist at Kayanga Catholic church in Murambo parish, Butanda sub-county, Kabale district. The incident occurred on Monday at around 07:00 AM.
Elly Maate, Police Spokesperson for Kigezi region says that Kizabona was sailing alone while crossing the lake from Kayanga catholic church to Harutinda shores in Kitumba sub-county. Maate says that on reaching the middle of the lake, the canoe lost balance and capsized.
Maate says that preliminary investigations conducted by marine officers at the lake indicate that Kizabona had not used any lifesaving protection while crossing the lake. Maate adds that efforts to retrieve the deceased’s body are underway. The case is registered at police marines detach Bunyonyi under file number SD 04/19/07/2021.
