Residents of Bucundura parish in Kashambya Sub County in conjunction with the area Member of Parliament Roland Ndyomugyenyi have used their own means to re-fix the Rugoma bridge after the government’s failure to rehabilitate it.

The bridge connects 10 villages in Bucundura parish, Bucundura-Butambi road, Rukiga-Rubanda districts, and Bucundura and Bikongozo at the border of Rukiga and Rukungiri districts. However, the bridge was completely washed away by floods in November last year resulting from heavy rains.

But since then, the district has not taken a step to save the situation. Residents who include Gad kazingo Turyahikayo, Zaburoni Tumuryamye, Conrad Nasasira, and Novia Tukwasibwe say that despite several efforts to engage the district leadership to work on the bridge, nothing has been done to save the situation. They say that it has been very difficult to transport their agricultural products to the market due to lack of access to the markets.

They commend Ndyomugyenyi for his efforts towards rehabilitating the bridge that has been transporting in the parish at stake.

The Bucundura parish male councilor Caleb Tugumisirize says that he engaged the district leadership to rehabilitate the bridge in vain. He said that Bucundura has for the last five months been disconnected from the entire Kashambya Sub County which he said affected access to social services by residents.

The Rukiga county Member of Parliament Roland Ndyomugyenyi says that his intervention to join the residents to rehabilitate the bridge followed a call from the residents who asked for immediate assistance. Ndyomugyenyi adds that joined the residents to ensure that the bridge is temporarily fixed as he continues to engage the government through the ministry of works and transport for support.
