Rukungiri police have apprehended James Kashaija, 54, on suspicion of murdering his wife, Enid Ndyomuhyenyi, 44, in a domestic altercation. The incident occurred on the night of April 3, 2024, at their residence in Rwanama village, Kahoko parish, Nyakishenyi sub-county, Rukungiri district.

Kigezi regional police spokesperson Elly Maate says that according to reports provided by Twinamatsiko Phenehansi, the alleged murder transpired around 11:00 PM when Kashaija returned home from a social gathering at the Omukikona trading center. A confrontation erupted between the couple after Kashaija accused his wife of being intoxicated. In response, Ndyomuhyenyi pointed out her husband’s own alcohol consumption, further fueling the dispute.

Maate adds that the situation escalated when Kashaija, in a fit of rage, physically assaulted his wife using his black gumboots, targeting her chest and back. Despite attempts to intervene, Kashaija persisted in his violent onslaught, utilizing an old piece of timber to inflict additional injuries to Ndyomuhyenyi’s legs, knees, and neck. Tragically, Ndyomuhyenyi was left defenseless and unclothed on the floor as Kashaija retired to another room for the night.

The following morning, upon discovering his wife deceased, Kashaija informed his daughter, Tushabomwe Emily, who promptly notified authorities, including Twinamatsiko Phenehansi, who then reported the incident to the police.

Law enforcement officials swiftly responded, conducting a thorough examination of the crime scene, gathering statements from witnesses, and recovering crucial evidence, including the black gumboots and the piece of timber allegedly used in the assault. Kashaija was subsequently arrested, while Ndyomuhyenyi’s body was transported to the Rwakabengo Health Center III mortuary for a postmortem examination.
