S.6 leaver commits suicide over tuition

The police in Rukiga have launched investigations into the circumstances of the death of a 20-year-old student who committed suicide by hanging after his parents failed to raise university tuition fees. 

The deceased was Twikirize Yafesi, an S.6 leaver and resident of Kinanura village in Noozi Parish, Rwamucucu Sub County in Rukiga District, according to Kigezi region police spokesperson Elly Maate.

Maate told journalists that the case was reported to the police by Tumuhimbise Evelyn, who narrated that the deceased had completed S.6 and hoped to attend university. 

He adds that after his parents informed him that they had no means of catering for his university education and advised him to join a technical school, Twikirize was angered and today, January 27th, 2022, he was found hanging in a tree about 5 meters from his parents’ house.

Maate said that the scene was visited by police detectives led by Turyamutangirira Nelson and a homicide team who examined the body and handed it over to the parents for burial.

However, Maate however, said that the case was registered at Rukiga Central Police Station under reference number CRB 051/2022 to help in investigations.
